Poke 20 offers an extra dimension in on-line music distribution; a free download album combined with a physical art project and blank CD. Poke 20 is initiated by the Dutch Productiehuis ON in collaboration with independent record label esc.rec.

Poke 20 is the sequel of the C64 Orchestra project in which a classical orchestra played newly arranged C64 game music, such as International Karate, Monty On The Run and Myth. In Poke 20 we re-returned the C64 Orchestra version of the Monty On The Run track to contemporary electronic composers and musicians to create their own remix version.

The Download album:
Twenty-one musicians from around the globe have contributed their remix of Monty On The Run (the C64 Orchestra version) and agreed with a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licensed Poke 20 release of their remix. You are therefore free to download, copy, distribute their remix versions but it would be nice to give them a big up if you enjoy their work.

The Art project:
Ontwerpatelier designed a poster, remixing artwork supplied by the Poke 20 remixers. This poster serves as packaging for a blank CD. Poster and blank CD are both silk-screened and together they make a nice piece of art in a limited (and numbered) edition of 200 copies. You can order your limited edition poster and blank cd here (for only 10 euro ex. postage) and burn your Poke 20 downloaded tracks on it to complete your own personal piece of art.

Review in Vital Weekly by Frans de Waard:

POKE 20
To the world outside The Netherlands it may seem that anything goes here, and that there is always money for it. Cross-over here is the ideal word. Cross-over between media (art, music, internet) or between styles (let your hip hop be played by an orchestra) or age and gender (bring your hip hop to shady pines). So let me assure you that when someone thought of the idea of writing out Commodore 64 for a twelve piece orchestra, it was not too difficult to find money for it. Now the ‘full circle’ has been made by asking twenty people to do a remix of Monty ON the Run: from 8 bit to an orchestra and back to the dancefloor. Not that you can get it that easy, or in a quality that good: the music is stored on a website, but you can order a CD cover and blank CDR to copy the download on. ‘Revolutionary artwork has to put free download album Poke 20 on the map’, as the press text announces. Music/media/internet, don’t let the CD decide what you get, you burn onto CDR what you like – young and hip. I am a bit wary for all of this. Sceptical, cynical even. It sounds like game to remain busy for artists – not the work you create is important, relevant or beautiful, but the buzz you create or the grant you pick up. But I got one for free (hence the review of what is basically a MP3 release), so I downloaded the whole thing and actually these remixes, although I didn’t have a Commodore 64, nor did I visit the orchestra playing the tunes, but this game-boy music mixed with samples from an orchestra is actually quite entertaining. Many use the melody again and again, so after some time you get the drift, unless you wish to see this as a larger conceptual music, executed by an electronic orchestra of twenty people, interpreting the same score. Despite all my reservations, I liked the musical part and that’s perhaps the only part we should care about. (FdW)

Revu:

Review in OOR:

IMOLFO:

Esc.rec, local Netherlands electronic music label and worldly online netlabel put together a fuller than full album, Poke 20, of the C64 “Monty on the Run” theme song remixes by various artists on their label. This project is a collaboration of esc.rec and productiehuis ON. Productiehuis’s website is in Dutch, and sadly I can’t read more into it, but here is a blurb about the collaboration from an English page on the site:

“Poke 20 is the sequel of the C64 Orchestra project in which a classical orchestra played newly arranged C64 game music, such as International Karate, Monty On The Run and Myth. In Poke 20 we re-returned the C64 Orchestra version of the Monty On The Run track to contemporary electronic composers and musicians to create their own remix version.”

The three instant gratification songs below are my favorites from my first listen of the album, but I have a feeling I’ll be switching all the tracks on and off of my Ipod for a long time. Each remix has its own unique style and each artist throws some seriously sly production, better known as electronic musicianery, in the mix that sets this album apart from the many other “One Move Larry” compilations out there.

***Esc.rec is offering it free but the rad poster artwork, by Ontwerpatelier, is available for sale and donations for the collab are totally awesome of you.
