Poke 20 offers an extra dimension in on-line music distribution; a free download album combined with a physical art project and blank CD. Poke 20 is initiated by the Dutch Productiehuis ON in collaboration with independent record label esc.rec.

Poke 20 is the sequel of the C64 Orchestra project in which a classical orchestra played newly arranged C64 game music, such as International Karate, Monty On The Run and Myth. In Poke 20 we re-returned the C64 Orchestra version of the Monty On The Run track to contemporary electronic composers and musicians to create their own remix version.

The Download album:
Twenty-one musicians from around the globe have contributed their remix of Monty On The Run (the C64 Orchestra version) and agreed with a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licensed Poke 20 release of their remix. You are therefore free to download, copy, distribute their remix versions but it would be nice to give them a big up if you enjoy their work.

The Art project:
Ontwerpatelier designed a poster, remixing artwork supplied by the Poke 20 remixers. This poster serves as packaging for a blank CD. Poster and blank CD are both silk-screened and together they make a nice piece of art in a limited (and numbered) edition of 200 copies. You can order your limited edition poster and blank cd here (for only 10 euro ex. postage) and burn your Poke 20 downloaded tracks on it to complete your own personal piece of art.

Edwin van der Heide wins Art+Technology Award

Edwin van der Heide wins the Witteveen+Bos Art+Technology Award 2009 (congratulations, Edwin)! For people interested in attending the award presentation in the Bergkerk in Deventer on the 12th of November, please read this invitation (pdf) and register for the presentation of the award through communicatie@witteveenbos.nl.

The Art+Technology Award will be presented by Harry Webers, general manager Witteveen+Bos on 12 November 2009 (17.00 hrs). Furthermore Andrée van de Kerckhove, chairperson of the jury, will amplify the nomination and Bas Haring, writer and philosopher, will give a short dissertation on the subject art-science-technology.

The presentation will be followed by one of Edwin van der Heide’s Laser Sound Performances.

From 13 november till 3 december a new installation, especially developed by Edwin van der Heide is shown in the Bergkerk.

Really good to see Edwin van der Heide back in Deventer! Back in 2004, only a few people showed up for his performance when I booked him for one of the J’ee-haw! Sunday Matinees in the IJsselhotel in Deventer. I suspect his work will attract a much larger audience now!

Torrented catalogue

Due to good results when experimenting with torrent distribution and embeddable players, esc.rec. has now uploaded it’s entire free catalogue to torrent sites Mininova and LegalTorrents and made them available in an embeddable Fairtilizer player.

So check out these release pages for the new free download options:
Robert Witt – Midazolam (tracks 1-7)
Yop – A Ltd. Lion Pup
Toxic Chicken – Make My Day
Yoshimi! – II aka The Cheshire Rat
slo-fi – ’s loot

Have fun downloading and listening!

Embedding and torrents

Esc.rec. has been experimenting with some new features and distribution methods for it’s free downloads lately. Starting with the latest release by Transfolmer, you can now embed a Fairtilizer player wherever you like, from which you can either listen or download the entire release. I’m still testing this service, but so far the results look promising. So for now, Fairtilizer is my embeddable player of choice.

Also, following in the pioneering footsteps of esteemed colleagues Beep! Beep! back up the Truck and WM Recordings, esc.rec. now uses torrent sites as a distribution channel. Mininova and LegalTorrents both offer excellent support in hosting torrents by content creators. Incorporating torrent sites as a means of music distribution is a good choice so it seems, because although I only put these torrents online yesterday, the number of downloads and seeders of the torrent on Mininova on the first day amazes me… and the torrent on LegalTorrents doesn’t get downloaded as many times but did get instant good reviews on Twitter.

In these Buma/Stemra infested times (read all about it), esc.rec. firmly embraces the new music industry. To be continued…
